A new project encouraging everyone to get outside into their gardens and local parks and take photos of the wildlife they don’t recognise. Pictures can be uploaded onto the website to be shared with others and everyone can have a go at identifying the mystery plants and animals.
The project is part of National Science and Engineering Week which runs from 12–21 March. This year’s theme is Earth to tie in with the International Year of Biodiversity, and covers everything about the Earth from its wildlife and people to its formation and place in the universe.
What on Earth? has been developed working with iSpot, the Open University’s online wildlife identification service. A panel of scientists will be on hand to help identify and discuss the plants and animals spotted. The uploaded images will be used to map the range of species found across the UK and the most unusual sightings will be highlighted.
Everyone who sends in a photo will get a free packet of flower seeds as well as a Biodiversity Information and Activity Pack. Launched in early February, the project will run for just two months so get snapping now.
There is also the chance to win a green roof for your local school or educational building. The prize will be awarded to the area of the UK that uploads the most images onto the website.
